Cash withdrawal - 300% more expensive than in the rest of the EU

18.05.2007, 18:20 6

The cost of withdrawing cash from ATM machines, from both a current account or from a deposit, accounts for 33% of the average annual price for banking services paid by a Romanian client. The cost is four times as high as the average cost in the euro zone, and twice as much as in Croatia, according to the 2007 issue of the World Retail Banking Report. As a first, the study also includes information on Romanian retail banking market, which is based on reports sent by nine banks - HVB, Bancpost, CEC (The Romanian Savings Bank), Alpha Bank, Banca Transilvania, ING Bank, Raiffeisen, BRD and BCR. However, Romanians only pay about 60% of the average cost in the euro zone for payment services offered by banks over a one-year period. This can be explained by the fact that there is still a preference for cash in Romania, with retail payment conducted through banks accounting for a low share. On the other hand, for an average client, commissions for inter-bank payments remain high. However, starting last year, the introduction of electronic inter-bank systems has allowed for a gradual reduction in costs.
