Confex Matex makes military garments

12.05.2006, 00:00 14

At a time when the domestic textile industry, doing work contracted out by others, is losing ground to China and other East-European states, Confex Matex of Deva has found a solution to stay competitive in the market: military clothing production. Thus, the French Gendarmerie, NATO troops and the Italian Navy are wearing uniforms manufactured in Deva.

With turnover worth around 3.2 million euros registered at the end of 2005, and an estimated 20% rate of growth for 2006, Confex Matex of Deva is trying to find solutions to continue its activities in the difficult textile outsourcing market.

"Since 2003, orders for clothes produced in an outsourcing system have started to be manufactured in other countries, we''ve been seeking a solution to maintain our current production capacity. Thus, the company''s managers have turned their attention to military garments and have managed to secure a series of contracts in Italy, Spain and France," stated Adriana Sevastian, Confex Matex CEO.

Confex Matex is an Italian-Romanian owned company, with the Italian party owning 98% in stock. Orders for military uniforms are negotiated by the Italian managers and sent to Deva-based plant.

Currently, Confex Matex manufactures military uniforms for the French Gendarmerie, the Italian Navy and for NATO troops in France, Spain and Italy.

"A company managing to seal a series of contracts benefiting the army has the advantage of operating on a secure and constant retail market, guaranteed high volumes of orders. It is true that, to manage to get such contracts, a company must have high-performance sewing machines. This is because the manufacturing of military uniforms takes a series of complex operations that cannot be performed with any type of sewing machine. This is one of the reasons why Confex Matex secured these contracts," explains the official of Deva-based company.

Adriana Sevastian also says the second important issue potential beneficiaries take into account is production capacity. "We have 300 people working in our plant, and we manage to deliver about 25,000 military uniforms monthly," the firm''s CEO also says. Besides military wear, the company continues to make civilian clothing.
