Less than 10% of last year's exports are agrifood products

Romanian last year exported agrifood products worth 3 billioneuros, up 40% on the 2.1 billion euros recorded in 2009. Exports ofagrifood products account for about 8% of all exports recorded lastyear, according to ZF estimates.

Six of the top ten categories of agrifood products that wereexported are basic agricultural products, with low added value.

Among the top ten agrifood product exports in terms of value arebasic agricultural products such as wheat, maize, rapeseed, barley,and sunflower. The value of the top ten agrifood products exportedamounts to 2.2 billion euros, 73% of the total value ofexports.

Agriculture Minister Valeriu Tabără said yesterday that Romanianeeded to limit agrifood exports in form of raw materials, with theauthorities' goal being to export processed agriculturalproducts.

"If wheat and maize are exported in form of raw material, weachieved nothing, we have to export products with higher addedvalue," Tabără said.

The trade deficit for agrifood products stands at around 800million euros.
