23.09.2005, 18:40 42

In a speech before 10,000 people at the OpenWorld show, the head of software giant Oracle, Larry Ellison, said Romania was an important location for research into technology and technical support for the US database and business software developer.

He said Romania was as important as India in terms of strategic locations for Oracle. "Our company wanted to make its support centre operations more efficient, so we restricted their number and geographic location across the world," Liviu Gherman, technology sales consultant at Oracle Romania, explained to Ziarul Financiar. He added: "Our investments in Romania will continue, resulting in an increase in service quality."

The Romanian company now has eight technology and support centres in Romania, employing more than 200 specialists, explained Dan Garlasu, the company''s technology infrastructure sales manager. "We are still hiring people and will continue to do so," he said. Oracle''s centres cover a wide variety of fields, including support for European Union partners and those in Romania and Bulgaria (provided by the Partner Resource Network centre); technical support for Oracle clients throughout the world (Global Support Services); support for the solutions aimed at the European telecommunications sector (Application Consultants Team); and worldwide assistance for technology and technological applications (Global Product Support). Oracle also has a Research and Development centre.

Oracle Romania recently signed a pre-lease for 7,000 square metres of office space over 12 floors in the Floreasca Tower, an investment estimated at 10 million euros.

At the end of August, Oracle Romania''s shareholders decided to increase the company''s share capital by five million dollars (4.09 million euros) to a level of six million dollars (4.91 million euros) through a contribution in cash from the owners.

"The increase in share capital was a natural outcome of the growth of the entire business in Romania, including the development of the service and technology centres in Bucharest that service Oracle''s regional and global business. It was also a confirmation of the confidence Oracle has in the potential of the local market," said Stefan Cojocaru, general manager of Oracle''s Romanian branch. mihai.musatoiu@zf.ro
